About the artist

Kirstine Vaaben (b. 1963 in Copenhagen). She graduated from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in 1997 where she studied under the professors Vibeke Mencke Nielsen, Morten Stræde and Bjørn Nørgaard at the School of Sculpture and Graphical School.

Her artistic practice includes a range of different medias, such as sculpture, drawing, watercolor, photography and public commissions. As a foundation for her artistic work Kirstine Vaaben always turns a special attention to materials which are determined by the focus she chooses for her current exploration. It is therefore deliberate and far from incidental that her works appear as they do. To Kirstine Vaaben it is a great challenge to visualize shapes and structures. Generally, Kirstine Vaaben works in both two- and three-dimensional spaces and alternates between different genres and materials. The tension between surface and form is a central theme and Kirstine Vaaben always works consciously with the spaces she deals with, whether in exhibition or public commissions. She often uses direct prints of nature in her sculptures in plaster, clay, wax and bronze. Her works emerge through working with the materials. It is the structure and texture that fascinates her, and which are directly translated into her sculpture’s surfaces and shapes.
